in fact, house speaker john boehner today said that these negotiations are essentially in a stalemate. president obama as you know hit the road, went to hatfield, pennsylvania to take his case to the people of pennsylvania. trying to put pressure on republicans to get on board with his plan to increase taxes on the wealthiest americans. he made his case at a toy maker there and exceptionally said that if lawmakers can't get a deal done by the first of the year, taxes will go up on middle class americans by about $2,000. that will be bad for middle class americans and also bad for businesses like connects toy maker which is where he spoke a little earlier on today. especially as we enter the busy holiday shopping season. here is a little more of what president obama had to say today. take a listen. >> if congress does nothing, every family in america will see their income taxes automatically go up on january 1st. every family. everybody here, you'll see your taxes go up on january 1st. i mean, i'm assuming that doesn't sound too good to you. that's sort of like the lump of coal you get

of course boehner will be key to moving the needle on these fiscal cliff negotiations. this comes on the heels of a phone call between president obama and speaker boehner which occurred credit. my sources are telling me the phone call lasted for about a half an hour. politico described it as curt, but may sources say that's not necessarily the case. so of course treasury secretary tim geithner coming in to the hill trying to move the needle on the fiscal cliff and we're hearing that there are sort of broad outlines of a framework emerging. but of course they really need to put some meat on the bones. what does that mean in terms of increasing taxes and cutting medicare. to those are some of the issues being hammered out today. >> kristen, thank you so much. so as we said, it is tim geithner's day on the hill. is this a sign that talks are being accelerating or hitting stumbling blocks? joining me now senator kent conrad. sir, great to have you here. we showed the headline at the top of the show, from politico, the fiscal framework emerging. are the contours of the deal

obama's objective in these negotiations is not economic but political. not to solve the debt crisis but to fracture the republican majority in the house. get boehner to cave, pass the tax hike with democratic votes provided by minority leader nancy pelosi and let the republican civil war begin. it doesn't even matter whether boehner gets deposed as speaker. either way, the republican house would be neutered, giving obama a free hand to dominate washington and fashion the entitlement state of his liking. what should republicans do? stop giving stuff away. if obama remains intransigent, let him be the one to take us over the cliff, and then let the new house, which is sworn in weeks before the president, immediately introduce and pass a full across-the-board restoration of the george w. bush tax cuts. >> so i don't think that's inconsistent with anything that i just said. i agree with him 100%. what have i been saying for a week? do not cave. compromise. do not cave. if the president doesn't want to meet us halfway on massive entitlement cuts, on reforming
